Inter-firm dynamics

We now move beyond the internal dynamics of Makassar’s small enterprises, to ascertain the degree to which they were embedded in a range of linkages and networks, and the levels of trust involved. The networks are analysed in terms of two levels of relationships, namely within extended families, as well as between enterprises and their suppliers and distributors. After this we consider the innovative behaviour apparent in a number of small enterprises, often supported by networking structures, before turning to an examination of enterprises operating within clusters. The chapter concludes with an examination of attitudes to, and expectations held by entrepreneurs concerning the future, before we turn, in Chapter 7, to examine the constraints they faced in reaching whatever future goals they had in mind.
